VOLUNTEER RECOGNTION ‘MUST DO’ FOR TRUE VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION

March 3rd, 2010

Volunteer management, volunteer recruitment and volunteer recognition strategies…

Hi All,

Now here we go with another idea for you on…

SUCCESSFUL VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION AND APPRECIATION

The third ‘must do’ component to make your volunteer recognition and appreciation program truly successful.

KEY MUST DO NUMBER 3 – TIMELY AND SPECIFIC

Volunteer Recognition should be timely and specific. Timing is critical. The sooner you praise and recognize your volunteers for their achievements, the more impact it will have. The longer a volunteer waits to receive recognition, the less value it will have.

VOLUNTEER MANAGEMENT AND YOUR VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION

February 5th, 2010

Volunteer management, volunteer recruitment and volunteer recognition ideas for you…

Hi Everyone

Here’s some thoughts for you on…

THE IMPORTANCE OF RECOGNITION

Thanks to everyone who posted comments in response to Christine’s question last week. You can add more comments or read what everyone had to say at…

One of the most important aspects of staying motivated and retaining both volunteers and paid staff is recognition and appreciation.

THANKS FROM THOSE WHO SHOULD…

Recognition and appreciation can come from many areas but there is one area that is vital and happens all too infrequently. It is genuine appreciation and recognition from those who are direct line managers and in other leadership roles.

Volunteer managers are often very good at showing appreciation and giving recognition to their volunteers. But often receive little themselves from those in management and leadership roles in the organization or group.

LET’S MAKE THIS VERY CLEAR…

So let’s make this really clear. We are all human! The need to be recognized, rewarded and appreciated is a basic human need. Without recognition, you need a really thick skin and great internal drive to keep on going. Every one of us needs to feel valued for our efforts, our skills, our achievements and our potential.

YOU DESERVE IT TOO

Over the next few weeks we’ll be answering some questions people have sent in about volunteer recognition. But understand that appreciation and recognition is not only for volunteers – you absolutely deserve it too!

Adapted from the book full of 501 great ideas… Count on Me! 501 Ideas on Retaining, Recognizing and Rewarding Volunteers

ONE INSPIRATIONAL QUOTE FOR YOU

You really have to look inside yourself and find your own inner strength, and say, I’m proud of what I am and who I am, and I’m just going to be myself – Mariah Carey

VOLUNTEER MANAGEMENT AND HOW DO YOU STAY MOTIVATED?

January 20th, 2010

Volunteer management, volunteer recruitment, volunteer recognition ideas for you…

Thanks to everyone who either posted a volunteer management, volunteer recruitment or volunteer recognition question on the blog or as most people did, sent through their question directly via email. We can’t guarantee that we’ll get to them all but we’ll see how we go.

Now instead of starting with answers to these questions, this email was sent through to us by Christine (name changed) who is involved in the emergency management sector (organization supplied). This email represents the experiences of many involved in volunteer management, it is seldom talked about and we’d really like to hear what you think about this too.

VOLUNTEER MANAGEMENT – HOW DO YOU STAY MOTIVATED?

Hi Judy,

I have a question for you! What keeps you motivated Judy? What keeps you so inspired? Does anyone ever inspire you or encourage you? How? I ask these questions as I’m sure there are many people out there whose job it is to recruit new volunteers and who don’t receive any recognition of their great work. They may be a volunteer themselves or they may be in a professional role and are paid to recruit new members or volunteers. I know they all do a sensational job of managing and recognising the tremendous effort volunteers put in.

But do these people ever receive any recognition or thanks or “anything” to say they do a great job? Or do they have to keep themselves motivated and keep reminding themselves they are doing a great job. Do they ever feel they are ignored and forgotten when the pats on the back are handed out? Maybe they do. Maybe they don’t. I would love to know and I would love to also know how many people feel this way.

For myself, it doesn’t take a lot to get me excited and I get amazing pleasure out of sharing my love of my organisation with others. If I recruit someone new, I am over the moon and then I’m always keen to support them in any way I can so they too can enjoy their volunteering. Often the only encouragement/recognition I receive to continue in my role is me telling myself “YOU ARE A LEGEND CHRISTINE” and that has kept me going great guns for nearly 30 years. I would love to know how others keep motivated.

Cheers

Christine

I’ve done tiny terracotta pots using lollipops as a flower decorations, candy wrapped in foil paper with a ribbon attached to a coffee coupon from the local coffee shops, donated coffee mugs from a coffee shop filled with teas/coffee/hot chocolate packets, etc. I can’t spend more than $2-3 per gift. Volunteer management and multiplying volunteer recruitment and volunteer recognition ideas

November 28th, 2009

Volunteer management, volunteer recruitment and volunteer recognition ideas for you…

Here’s a powerful volunteer management idea for you on…

MULTIPLYING CREATIVE IDEAS AS A TEAM

Ever felt that you and your team have run out of ideas on volunteer recruitment, volunteer recognition and retention? Here’s a great way to generate a multitude of new ideas without really trying.

Grab a couple of good books on volunteer recruitment, volunteer retention and recognition. I happen to be biased towards these two books at the link below…

http://www.morevolunteers.com/productsbookspecialoffer.htm

But you can use other books on the subject. Divide the number of chapters in the books by the number of volunteers on your team. Where there’s more volunteers than chapters, then form your volunteers into groups for each chapter.

VOLUNTEER MANAGEMENT BRAINSTORMING SUCCESS SESSION

Arrange to hold a brainstorming session a month later with your volunteers or fellow staff involved with volunteers. Ask people to read only their chosen chapter with two aims for the upcoming session to:

1. explain the ideas in that chapter to everyone

2. add 3 more ideas of their own ’sparked’ by the ideas from the chapter they read.

This is very powerful team learning. You’ll be absolutely amazed at just how many great ideas
the team will come up with, on volunteer recruitment and volunteer recognition, in this brainstorming session.

Cheers

Volunteer management and a great volunteer recognition strategy

November 18th, 2009

Volunteer management ideas and also volunteer recruitment and volunteer recognition ideas

Hi All,

Here’s a quick but powerful idea for you involved in volunteer management on…

GREAT VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION STRATEGY
volunteer-father-christmas
This idea was sent in by Joy who heard it from another manager of volunteers at a meeting. Here goes…

Hi Judy,

How about our new Volunteer whose job it is buy individual gifts for each of our Volunteers (over 300). This means that they have a year to contact each volunteer and find out their special interests, buy a present and gift-wrap it, so we can give a personalized gift with a card.

Joy Little, Manager, Each Volunteer Program, Ringwood Victoria

GREAT VOLUNTEER RECOGNTION IDEA TO USE

Excellent volunteer management idea and a great way to customize the volunteer recognition gifts. Thanks Joy for sharing this one.

How would this work for you? It really is time to think about not doing it all yourself? Is there a volunteer or two just waiting to take on this role? What if they start with writing the Christmas cards and popping in a volunteer recognition quote magnet?

Cheers

JUDY

Volunteer management and the biggest secret in volunteer recognition gifts

November 10th, 2009

Volunteer management, volunteer recruitment and volunteer recognition quick ideas…

Here’s another idea for you on the…

BIGGEST SECRET TO VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION GIFTS

volunteer-recognition-gifts
So many people involved in volunteer management ask me what are the best volunteer recognition gifts to give to volunteers? My answer surprises many people…

It’s not always about the volunteer recognition gift itself. It is what you do with that gift! The real value of the gift is in how you customize and personalize the volunteer recognition gift.

FOR THOSE IN VOLUNTEER MANAGEMENT

Let me explain further…a government organization contacted me to purchase a bulk order of my two books on volunteer management, volunteer recruitment and volunteer recognition.

They wanted to give a set of the 2 books to each of the voluntary organizations they had worked with during the year as a thank you present. Great idea! Books are always seen as valuable and useful gifts! YOUR VERY SPECIAL BOOK OFFER

BUT WAIT THERE’S MORE…

They then personalized the gifts by placing a hand-written thank-you card in with each set of volunteering books.

BUT WAIT THERE’S EVEN MORE…

I was also asked if I had any further suggestions for customizing the gifts. You bet I did! I suggested that if they sent me the list of organizations then I would add some further customization. I would write a few words to each organization and sign the books…

For example, “X (name of government department) told me about the great job you have done throughout the year. I just wanted to say thanks X (name of voluntary organization). Keep up the great work!”

BONUS IN THE VOLUNTEER MANAGEMENT BOOKS

Now despite writer’s cramp and a lack of any celebrity status by the author – this was still a great bonus customization of the gift for each organization.

THINK CUSTOMIZATION IN VOLUNTEER MANAGEMENT

So when you are considering volunteer recognition gifts – think even beyond the gift to how you can personalize and customize that gift for each and every volunteer.

Cheers

JUDY

P.S. Just a reminder! There’s a very special time limited discount offer on both books at this link below. But only until the end of November…YOUR VERY SPECIAL BOOK OFFER
