Volunteer management, volunteer retention, volunteer recruitment

Hi Everyone,

Here’s quick idea for you in volunteer management on…

DEALING WITH PEOPLE AND BUILDING GREAT TEAMS

I’m soon facilitating some intensive workshops on dealing with difficult people and building terrific teams and you can read more details at the bottom of this blog. But right now I wanted to share with you one of the biggest myths that is always purported about teams and team building.

THE BEST TEAMS ARE IN TOTAL HARMONY OR MAYBE NOT

Many people believe that the best teams operate in total harmony. This is a myth and very dangerous to the success of any team. The very best teams involve what I call ‘creative conflict’. That is the space to respectfully disagree and present new and different ideas on how to do things.

THERE ARE MULTIPLE WAYS IN VOLUNTEER MANAGEMENT

When a team allows the opportunity and space to disagree and present different ideas, then you find that there are multiple ways to reach your goals. You can then pick and choose the best ideas to achieve these goals and continually improve. When a team does not allow the opportunity for creative conflict and robust discussion, then you often stick to only one way to go. This is often based on habit, tradition and/or the most dominant egos in the team.

MAKE SPACE FOR CREATIVE CONFLICT

So always aim in building your team to allow the space, time and opportunities for creative conflict.

NOW ONE QUOTE FOR YOU AND YOUR VOLUNTEERS

If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them – Henry David Thoreau
