Volunteer of the Month Awards – What Do You Actually Think?

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

Hi Everyone,

What are your thoughts on Volunteer of the Month Awards?

Last time I mentioned an idea for generating publicity using a Volunteer of the Month Award in the local paper.

Here’s a summary of the idea…

How about running a volunteer of the month award? Write a tribute article for the local paper. Get the winner’s picture published with a quote about how much they enjoy their volunteer work. Add a message that you are seeking more volunteers for this rewarding work and include your contact details. It’s a wonderful way to recognize your volunteers and fantastic publicity for the organization or group.

This idea is adapted from the book Count Me In! 501 Ideas on Recruiting Volunteers at the link below…

A DIFFERENT POINT OF VIEW

Now not everyone agreed with the idea and Debbie Sibbick from Goulburn Mulwaree Council sent me this email…

Hi Judy, I have an issue with monthly rewards. It infers that others are not pulling their weight or that some employees/volunteers are better than others. Just my opinion. Deb

WHAT DO YOU THINK?

So with permission from Deb, we’d like to know your thoughts on this publicity idea. And your thoughts on Volunteer Awards. What do you think?

We’d really like to read what you think. So simply go to the bottom of this latest post click on ‘comments’ and add your thoughts…

Volunteer Management and Expected Volunteer Recognition Rule

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

Volunteer management, volunteer recognition and volunteer recruitment ideas for you…

Hi Everyone,

I’m finally finishing off this series on recognition by mentioning a vital point about…

EXPECTED VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION
Expected Volunteer Recognition is recognition that volunteers have become used to receiving, in fact it is pretty much expected. The annual Christmas Dinner or National Volunteer Week Lunch for your volunteers are examples of this volunteer recognition.

WHAT YOU MUST NEVER, EVER DO
With this type of recognition you must keep it going as it is a huge let down for volunteers and their expectations are shattered.

THE HAPPY BIRTHDAY STORY
For instance, for the last 10 years you have sent each volunteer a card for their birthday. This year, you’ve been so busy that it has slipped your mind. You’ve forgotten to send out cards for January to April birthdays. Word gets back to you that some of your volunteers are no longer feeling appreciated.

GUESS WHO IS FEELING UNAPPRECIATED?
Have a guess which volunteers are feeling unappreciated? Yes you’re right. It is those volunteers born from January through to April.

NEVER, EVER FORGET OR STOP
The most important point to remember that once you start sending birthday cards it becomes Expected Recognition. Then you must never, never forget or stop!

Now there’s something to think about!

Cheers

Volunteer Management and More on Unexpected Volunteer Recognition

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

More Volunteer Management, Volunteer Recruitment and Volunteer Recognition Ideas…

Hi Everyone

A follow-up for you on from the previous post relating to…

UNEXPECTED VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION IS VERY IMPORTANT

For those in volunteer management, last time I suggested using Unexpected Volunteer Recognition, where you show appreciation to your volunteers totally unexpectedly. You can read more about this idea again by reading the previous blog post.

I’ve received lots of emails from people about this and so I do need to clear up some confusion.  It is  necessary that you understand that both unexpected and expected volunteer recognition are needed to show volunteer appreciation most effectively.

UNEXPECTED RECOGNITION IS NOT A REPLACEMENT

Unexpected recognition is not a replacement for other volunteer recognition such as at Christmas time or during National Volunteer Week. This type of recognition is very important. If you always have a lunch or event to thank your volunteers during National Volunteer Week – don’t stop now. You need to keep up the great work of appreciating and recognizing your volunteers at these times.

JUST ADD ONE TOTAL SURPRISE

But also add just one totally unexpected type of volunteer recognition during the year. Such as a thank-you card and an inspirational volunteer quote magnet. Or another idea you want to try.

Why? Because when you add this surprise or unexpected recognition you are guaranteed to multiply the power of the recognition and positive memories for your volunteers.
