Volunteer Management and More Awards

Ideas on volunteer management, volunteer recruitment and volunteer recognition

Hi Everyone,

Here’s another idea for you on…

GENERATING PUBLICITY IN YOUR VOLUNTEER RECRUITMENT

Don’t be backward in coming forward! Nominate your organization and volunteers for any relevant awards. Don’t confine yourself to just volunteer based awards – think outside of the box.

Many groups are too modest about the value of what they do. Realize that awards are also a publicity opportunity that can assist in your recruitment efforts. It is great publicity about your volunteering program.

  1. Eli Demeny says:

On first reading, I liked the idea of Volunteer of the Month. I did it a few times, then was told by the particular Volunteer of the Month that he was embarrased by this attention and would prefer not to be named in this way, as he was sure that everyone just does their best, and no-one should be brought to attention in this way. On the very same day, one of our volunteers rang me and asked why he had never been chosen, in spite of working really hard and according to him always working to his maximum. This from a guy who appears to stand around chatting, stopping others from working. So I had to have a rethink.
Yes, some of our workers appear to have greater skills, and seem to work harder, but this may be because of their personality, rather than intent, and we really want to be equally welcome to everyone, as our organisation is not only for the people it services, but also for the people who belong as volunteers.
So now we thank everyone who comes in various ways, and I think everyone is happier. (No ‘teacher’s pet’)

  2. A Volunteer of the Month award really should be peer generated.
