Hi Everyone

Do you have a question or issue you would like answered regarding volunteer management, volunteer recruitment, retention or volunteer recognition?
I can’t guarantee that we’ll be able to get through them all. But we’ll do our best to answer many of questions during the year. Often people have very similar questions and issues they are dealing with. So by asking your question, you’ll be helping others experiencing similar situations and getting great ideas too.

We have a lot of trouble advertising for volunteers for our canteen. This year i am trying to focus on building community instead of criticalness… Whilst i can see how to advertise for more worthy causes using a lot of what you have written I struggle with asking for help for such a mundane unnecessary cause. I need to write a letter for new mums to the school and this is where i am stuck. Any ideas.
How do we deal with a very active ordinary level volunteer who does a lot of work for our organisation, but who cannot resist doing the work of other volunteers as well as their own work, often comments negatively on other people’s work behind people’s backs, behaves as though they own the organisation, and butts into conversations with customers. It has got to the stage when several volunteers no longer want to work when they know the very active person will be there because they resent the constant interference and complaints. But if we try to stop the very active person or upset them by telling them to stop interfering and criticising others, we will leave a big hole that will be difficult to fill.
I volunteer in the entertainment industry for theatre, television and radio for the past eleven years. I would like to know what is the best time of year for greeters, ushers and other volunteers in the entertainment industry? Is it just from September to March every year or is it another time of year as well? Most theatre seasons are from September to March. I would like to know as well if entertainment venues in Chicago, L.A. New York, Miami and other hub spots actually receive help from Entertainment Executives that know the field instead of senior citizens over 55?
Our organization supports the volunteer emergency services; fire, EMS, search&rescue and disaster response. One issue we have is the availability of day time volunteers. Support of emplyers is real important. We’d therefore like to run a recognition program for the employers who allow their employees to respond to emergencies from work. Not only will we be recognizing the employers, but also advertising the need for more employers to participate. One option we are considering is to create certificates or plaques and hand them out at Chamber of Commerce or Town Board meetings. Any other ideas would be appreciated.
To Bob, do you have lots from 1 company? what about having an event like a family picnic to thank the company and employees. It would also give an opportunity to find more volunteers. The company would also benefit from community building within the workplace.
