Volunteer Management Newsletter Part 1 and Part 2

The Secret To Volunteer Management Success! It's All In Your...

       STRATEGIES (continued)

Lead Generation

So where do we start? We'll look at these strategies in greater depth in future newsletters. But let's just give you 5 'quick read' volunteer recruitment strategies (often called 'lead generation' in business) to generate referrals and contacts that can increase your volunteer numbers.

Ripple Effect
Every person with whom you come into contact can play a part in your volunteer recruitment success. This does not necessarily mean that they will become a volunteer themselves, but they may be the referral to your next volunteer. Never underestimate the extent of people’s networks!

Room To Grow
Set a goal in your volunteer management and volunteer recruitment of adding a certain number of new people to the 'contact' database each week or month. There are countless ways of generating a continually growing list of contacts. Here are some simple ideas to start you off. Ask for the name and contact details of everyone who phones or visits your office. Leave a bowl on your reception desk for callers to leave their business cards. Collect the contact details of everyone. Start today!

Include a return stamped referral form or postcard with all your newsletters and other mail-out material. Ask people to use the forms to write their own name and contact details, or those of others, who they think might be interested in volunteering. There are so many people who would make wonderful volunteers if you only knew about them and could ask them.

Follow Up, Follow Up
If someone gives you a referral, follow it up on a potential volunteer. Contact the 'lead' personally and promptly. Get back to the person who gave you the referral in the first place and thank them. When they’ve gone to the trouble of giving you a referral, let them know you’ve acted on it or they may never suggest anyone again.

I'll Show You Mine
How about setting up a cross-referral arrangement with other voluntary organizations? A person who is not suited or has declined to volunteer for another group might be more interested in volunteering for you, or vice versa. Everyone wins when volunteers are matched to suitable voluntary work.

These strategies are adapted from the book Count Me In! 501 Ideas on Recruiting Volunteers, which is our PRODUCT OF THE MONTH FOR YOU!
