VOLUNTEER MOTIVATION NUMBER FOUR

In previous weeks I have mentioned a range of volunteer motivations – volunteer altruism, volunteer ideology, volunteer life changes, etc and I’m adding another one for you now.

I call it the SOCIAL LIFE.

Many people, including some retirees, may be seeking to remain active, mix with others and fill their leisure time with satisfying activities.

Others may be seeking break down the social walls and to meet new people or to combat loneliness and isolation through social interaction with others.

You can attract both types of people by emphasizing the social and leisure aspects of volunteering. But be sure to focus on ‘meeting new people’, rather than ‘curing loneliness’.

People will talk about volunteering to meet new people, but few will ever talk about or suggest that they are volunteering because they were lonely.
